This Week's Events

Please help me by sending in your results, for instance by filling in the tables below and forwarding to News@barunner.org.uk. Some events will have "Prompts" set up in Facebook. These allow the posting of a single image and some text and make it easy to flip through everyone's entries.

Monthly Mile (submit by end of Sunday 11th December):

Run one mile and send me your time or add the details to the prompt in Facebook. The mile can be somebody else's formal event or even one mile within a longer run. I'll then produce a fancy graph showing your time this month compared to those of other people and previous runs over the last year.

Editorial - It's gone quiet, is the footy on?

Very little to report on this week, perhaps you are all glued to the box. Contributions for next week invited. Or just some correspondence (I'm boycotting the World Cup until Saturday, nothing ever happens in these first round matches anyway).

NOW Syon Park 30th November 2022 - Reminder

This Wednesday the midday midweek run/jog/walk for "Non Office Workers" will be based on Syon Park, Brentford on Wednesday 30th November. Anyone and everyone is welcome - noone will be "working in the office" when they meet in the carpark.

The vehicle entrance to the park is from Park Road to the south.  There is a large free car park and a garden centre which has toilets and a cafe. The post code is TW8 8JF and what/three/words is "fend.trips.dare". Those attending should aim to meet at the garden centre entrance at 12 noon.

There will be a group jogging together and some walking also. Those who don't want to do either could just meet us in the cafe from 13:00.

Winter Handicap 2022-23, run 2, Wednesday 23rd November 2022 #

A cool evening with a hint of moisture in a light breeze greeted the runners for the second leg of this winter’s handicap series.  Unusually, Julie Barclay chose to run a warm-up lap starting at 6 p.m. and Alan Anderson started with her but walking from the outset.  This prompted a reminder that the target times are based on previous performances during the current season and that runners can only freely choose a target on their first run.  While runners should normally start so that a target beating run will bring them to the finish just before 7 p.m. it is the actual elapsed times that are used when the rankings are calculated.

I plan to continue and reach at least 200, perhaps 250 would be a sensible place to stop and do something else! Also for 2023 to reach P Index level 8, maybe even 9.
Tim Bellars Running 12miles North Downs Sun 02:02:00 12 mile cross-country run on a very wet almost submerged track along the foot of the North Downs. Dodged the rain. Bring on my marathon next Saturday!!!

Piers at Mura di Lucca parkrunparkrun Review Saturday 26th November 2022

There was a warning posted this week that car parking charges at Gunnersbury Park will be increasing soon and not just in line with inflation but DOUBLING (to £1 an hour).  The park is switching to RingGo (cashless).  There is some good news.  Profits from the parking revenue will be spent on the footpaths along the southern side of the park which have been incorporated into all of the various parkrun courses used over the years since 2011.  The cost of each metre of refurbished footpath is estimated at £180 with work due to start in the Spring of 2023.  Early in the last century the nearby stretch of the A4 through Brentford was known as the Golden Mile.  I’ll let you know when the new path is ready for us.

Frankie Hogge (20:12) is the first lady of California this week with pb run chopping 34 secs of her previous best time there.  Murray Hogge (20:13, 80.17%) was just one second behind with our best age-grade score of the week.

David Cowell (19:29) was our fastest runner this week with a 4th place at Clair parkrun (Haywards Heath) with a time which lowered the club record by several minutes.

Jacqui Musselwhite (28:34) visited her first parkrun in Denmark this week and ran at the long established Faelledparken in Copenhagen.  David Duggan has been on a seasonal visit to Florida taking in the Clermont Waterfront Thanksgiving parkrun (Orlando area) Jacksonville on Thursday(33:26) and then nipping over to the Ed Austin Regional parkrun (Jacksonville) on Saturday (34:33).  He has done 50 parkruns in 2022 already and it is still only November!  The club total has moved on to 692.

Piers was at Lucca near Florence ahead of his marathon the following day.

Our most fancied tourist destination this week was Brokenhurst with five members all running there for the first time.  Club members at Brockenhurst parkrunPaul Watt (22:06, club rec) was followed in by Julie Barclay (25:46,club rec (F)), Vera Simms (29:34), Roderick Hoffman (31:12) and Janice Jones(31:55).  Roderick Hoffman’s total of 342 different parkruns keeps him in 25th place in the worldwide list of parkrun tourists.  There are currently 10 runners who have run at 400 or more different parkruns.

Denis and Joan Foxley have been enthusiastic supporters of Harrow parkrun since it started in the Autumn of 2015 volunteering on many occasions as well as running when they are able.  This week, with a stage-managed double act, Denis completed his 200th parkrun (plus 125 volunteer credits including 51 as Run Director) while Joan completed her 232nd and 200th at Harrow itself (plus 88 volunteer credits).

Trish McCabe (27:52) chose a non horse racing day to visit York parkrun and collect her “Y” and complete her 24 letter alphabet based on UK events. Eight club members have now run at York, just once each. Some members have travelled abroad for a “Z”.

Steve Newell

Matters Arising - parkruns completed this year and 2022 Bingo

Including the specials David Duggan has now completed 50 parkruns this year and, as we know, also gets lots of volunteer credits as well.

Next highest achievers are Paul Watt and Julie Barclay on 47, Mike Dennison and Barry Walters with 46, Trish McCabe and Maria Jovani with 45, Melanie Miller on 43, Steve Newell and John Scaife on 41 and Benita Scaife and Roderick Hoffman on 40. There are another five Saturdays in December plus the option of at least one special event (on Christmas Day). But please volunteer if you are able to, including for roles that prevent you running at 5k events.

And achievements are better when there is a random element as well! Of the above, the following have achieved a complete row in the 2022 Seconds Bingo Card:

  • David Duggan with 2, 12, 22, 32, 42 and 52. Also David only needs "55" to complete the 50s column.
  • Steve Newell with 1, 11, 21, 31, 41 and 51.
  • Trish McCabe needs "46 to complete her 40s column.
  • Jain Reid may have only done 37 parkruns but she has a full 2022 Bingo row with 00, 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50.

Steve Taylor's run to and from Southall

I can see from "Strava" that Steve didn't run the direct 2.4km route between his home and his nearest parkrun - he ran there and back in 8km each way so with the parkrun 21km in total.

Stockley Country Park parkrun

I will say this only twice...We are getting closer to launching Stockley Country Park parkrun. We have a full dress rehearsal on a Sunday morning in December. Obviously, we need volunteers and runners to join in the test - please let me know if you are interested in helping. Thanks to those who have contacted me already.

> Roderick Hoffman

I'm aware that there are several club members who are regular parkrunners and frequent tourists who have never run at an inaugural parkrun, perhaps because they are waiting for a local one to start up. I will not be broadcasting the start date for the Stockley Country Park parkrun, because it is parkrun policy not to do so for fear of attracting large numbers to the inaugural. However, I can say that those helping, including running, at the test event will be in a much better position to hear about the inaugural in the period leading up to it. Also, let me know if you have a different reason to want to attend the inaugural, and I'll see what I can do.
