Notes:

* The 5k course was definitely long - perhaps at about 5.65k - so 5k times above should be reduced by about 12% to make them compatible with other 5k results.

# Awards are as recorded as being given out on the evening - these have not been confirmed (and not all seem to tally with the results).

Overall stats - 40 airlines and aviation related companies took part with 442 WARRiors finishing one or both races - 378 finished the 5k, 188 finished the 10k (123 ran both races).  With 17 runners in the BA team we were the 10th largest team. KLM were the largest with 31 runners, then Jet Blue (29) and Emirates (28) ahead of South African (27).  American Airline shad just four runners and Iberia were not represented.

Surrey League Results - Men

Hi guys,

The first men's Surrey league cross country race of the season took place at Lightwater Country Park on Saturday 19th. Conditions underfoot were very good and in mild weather. With some of our runners injured or ill we had a turnout of 7 runners + 1 guest, but still finished a very good 3rd on the day.

Chris Kelly lead the team home finishing 8th overall in div 4 followed by Richard Ruffell in 17th.  It was also good to see new member Mark Turner & Gary Rushmer Jnr (as guest) run in their first cross country races. Our next fixture is on November 9th at Roundshaw Downs with same start time of 3pm.

Division 4 results:

Chris Kelly  8th place  34.12
Richard Ruffell  17th place  37.09
Gary Rushmer  21st place  38.54
Simon Rurton  23rd place  39.01
Gary Rushmer Jnr  31st place  41.50
Neil Frediani  38th place  45.08
Mark Turner  39th place  45.12
Steve Hillier  46th place  54.53

Many thanks Gary Rushmer.

Ed: I hear that Neil ran himself into the ground to get one more place and hence one more point for the team - not realising that the guy he was overhauling was an "unbranded" BA colleague.  The effort IS appreciated.

Surrey League Results - Ladies

The first race of the season was held at the Lightwater Country Park on Sat 19 October hosted by Woking AC.

We were expected to provide an official for this event, and not knowing whether our ladies would be back in time from Cape Town I put myself forward in case no one else turned up. A couple of days before race day Helen got in touch to say she would be running and that Natalie was also available so after asking around, Richard/Bridget offered to take my place as the official so that I could run. In the end it was Graham Taylor, the first of our supporters to arrive, who helped with the funnel duties.

We had a good turnout with 6 runners - Kat, Lissa, Helen, Natalie, Carole and me. Kat led our team finishing in 26:34, 6th overall followed closely by Natalie in 29:20. Helen, fighting fit from WARR shot ahead of me early on and kept the lead despite my increased effort to catch up. I was totally puffed out by the end of the 2nd lap and then I realised there was a 3rd lap! Despite the forecast for rain, it remained dry with a light breeze for the duration of the race.

A big 'Thank You' to our supporters who cheered us on around the course.

6th 26.41 785 KATHERINE STATHER
33rd 29.20 793 NATALIE RUFFELL
69th 31.51 784 LISSA PRITCHARD
112th 35.44 792 HELEN SMITH
129th 38.12 788 CLARA HALKET
138th 40.09 794 CAROLE ASH

League table - total 35 teams (this may change as for some reason they recorded a phantom runner wearing one of our allocated numbers. This number has not been issued to anyone and is still in my possession!)

BAAC 'A' 9th        BAAC 'B' 32nd

The next match is taking place on Sat 07 December at Farthing Downs, Coulsdon. I look forward to seeing many of our ladies there :)

* Richard's time was as provided by himself since due to "a complete malfunction of the timer" all 253 finishers were given the same official time of 59:59. When this happened to me it think it was at Pymmes with only 12 competitors most of whom went to the cafe afterwards and so they were able to rebuild the full results.  Not so easy with 253!

I was sent apologies from Kerstin who after the build up I gave her was unable to attend at Gunnersbury last Saturday but should be there this Saturday to accept her points award.  In her place Alan Anderson was given a special award as volunteer of the year.  I'll also mention that Tony Hird came third in the Gunpowder points competition and these week-in week-out parkrun attendance and support is critically important for parkrun.  Steve Newell's Stats show that the club is about to run its 200th run at Black Park, its 300th at Bedfont and its 600th at Bushy!  Meanwhile I carried on my tourist ways at Fulham, my 59th different parkrun venue.  My time was another PB and two seconds faster than Joe at Black Park who must have thought he'd have had me this week!  Neil Frediani has challenged me to a 24 minute target race at Bushy on November 16th - so we'll be racing over the same course and with the same conditions (and a 24 minute pacer).  Anyone who wants to is welcome to join us.  Next Saturday though it's the tourist trail to the inaugural run at Aylesbury. Lifts possible if you are keen.

523 finishers, the winner took 34:11.  A personal achievement here - I went with the target of finishing in under 50 minutes and knew it would be a tough challenge - to make it possible I even made sure I started on the start line not one or more seconds behind it.  The previous occasion I broke 50 minutes for a 10k was in October 1999 when I was still in my 30s.

Photo Caption Competition

Captions for photo above of Simon of BA and Jim of Woking AC taken at the Surrey League Cross Country event on Saturday.

Brian: "HANDS OFF - I'M NO GAZZA"

Simon: "I thought it was only Vinnie Jones who employed tactics like that!"

Neil: "Get your baton out of there Simon or I will squeeze harder!"

{in fact Jim was running injured having fallen and somersaulted on the first lap and at this stage couldn't move his right arm - update from Woking AC: "Jim is fine, left with a small graze & bruised hand but no long term damage"}
