Saturday's Cross Country Reminder - Ladies Lloyd Park, Croydon 12:00 / Men Newlands Corner, Guildford 15:00

Next week - results and stories from this weekend's final Surrey League Cross Countries.  But a quick summary...

Mud, mud, glorious mud.

Magic Mile 6th February Results

Back to the normal direction this month and a slight tail wind. What the tail wind gave us we lost with the wet, dull weather! Good to see Bernard join us again and he was the only person record a PB this week knocking 4 seconds off. Dave Bird also had a good run, being only 2 seconds off his best. Finally a welcome to Matt Foden who joined for the first time. He opened his account with a solid 06:50 mile. Full Results.

Wednesday 12th February Club-Inhouse-Event "Heartthrob Hash" from 6pm from the Concorde Centre

Full rules: www.barunner.org.uk/attachments/HEARTTHROB HASH 2014.doc

In short - You have a MAXIMUM of seventy minutes to visit four checkpoints and collect from each a total of five cards to make up the best possible poker hand (see full rules for the value of hands). If you have time you may revisit checkpoints to swap cards to try to improve your hand.  Watches, GPS and buses may be used!  The map below shows the position of the checkpoints and some rough distances.

PS there are NO shortcuts across the golf course or motorway.

parkrun update

Most of us did the cross-countries this week but Steve Newell used a pass out to run Edinburgh parkrun to make it the club's 91st different park. Roderick "I don't do cross country" Hoffman travelled to Newport expecting to do the club's 92nd.  That didn't work out because Newport was cancelled due to the high winds but fortunately there was enough notice given so he was able to carry on down the M4 to Cardiff where Gareth Snook was able to give him the guided tour of Cardiff via the Cardiff parkrun.

Please reply if you are up to the challenge of making it a club sprint to 100 parkruns - I had very little response to last week's request. We are thinking of Saturday 15th March but it might have to be later - perhaps after the London Marathon. Let Roderick and/or Steve know.  Roderick Hoffman / Steve Newell

London Marathon request for Marshalls

The 2014 Virgin London Marathon is on SUNDAY 13th APRIL and we need your help to make it a success. I'm sure it's going to be another record year for entries and the elite field is looking as good as ever.

For those that have not helped before you'd be most welcome, as would any friends or relatives you can cajole into helping but don't be under any illusions it'll be an easy day. Helpers need to be on site between 9-9:30 and you most probably won't get away until 4-4:30pm. We need 130 volunteers to cover the five crossing points in the last 2 miles of the course at Waterloo Bridge, Parliament Square, Birdcage Walk, St James and Spur Rd.

All the team leaders are very experienced, as are many of the stalwart helpers that return year in year out, so don't worry if you're new to helping, they'll be plenty of advice. At this stage I need:

  •       name
  •       address
  •       e-mail
  •       phone contact (preferably a mobile)

If you have a preferred location please specify as we can usually accommodate most requests. In return you'll get the best view on the day, a T-shirt, helpers medal and will be helping to secure a donation to BAAC Club funds, not to mention the 20 guaranteed entries the club receive each year. Talking of which, if you've helped at London, it goes a long way to pushing you up the list for a guaranteed place the following year if you're unsuccessful through the ballot.

I'll only have kit for 130 volunteers so get in early to bag your space.  If you can help, please e-mail me, it would be great to have you on board.

Regards, Simon Turton simon.turton@ba.com

PS Later this week please expect to see a London Marathon training special arriving in your inboxes.
